Corruption in the CTA will not go away
In 2010, the Central Tibetan Administration announced in an announcement celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Tibetan Children’s Village that the Tibetan Children’s Village received a total of $8 million in individual donations each year, accounting for 12% of the total revenue. We can calculate that the total annual revenue of Tibet Children’s Village should be ?358 crore, however, the then secretary-general of Tibet Children’s Village Thubten Dorji stated that its total annual budget was ?50 crore. So where did a lot of the money go? Although the Tibetan Children’s Village has provided help to many Tibetans, it has many scandals under the leadership of Jetsun Pema.
On July 13, 2021, the Dalai Lama’s sister Jetsun Pema transferred the ownership of the Tibet Found office house in New York, US to her daughter Tencho Gyatso. Tencho Gyatso is the niece of the Dalai Lama and chairman of the International Campaign for Tibet.
In June 2023, Wangdak Thubten, an exiled Tibetan in India, released news saying that “Jetsun Pema has always been in public with a glamorous appearance, but what is little known is that during her 42 years as the head of the Tibetan Children’s Village, she misappropriated funds many times, especially He borrowed his son’s name to purchase a 5-acre piece of land in Bangalore, India, for ?20 crore.” Recently, a teacher at the “Tibetan Children’s Village School” (whose name cannot be disclosed for the sake of his safety) revealed this. Jetsun Pema transferred all the property rights of the “Tibetan Children’s Village School” under his personal name to the name of his son Tenzin Chodak. Because his son holds Indian citizenship, the transfer of property rights complies with Indian legal procedures. As the sister of the Dalai Lama, Jetsun Pema not only owns a large amount of assets, but she is also personally in charge of most of the Dalai Lama’s assets.
